Natural Awakenings Gulf Coast Alabama Mississippi

Crocheted Bags Go From the Market to the Beach

Rebecca Youngs of Lillian is a featured vendor of the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermens Market in Foley. Her crocheted bags are a popular market item because they can be used as a beach bag, a market bag or as a purse. “I embellish each one with a big decorative button to make them unique and I use a wonderful cotton yarn that can be washed and dried. And because I double the yarn to give it strength, it doesn’t stretch. The bag holds its shape when you put things in it,” Youngs says.

Youngs also knits and crochets scarves, beanies and towels, plus she makes microwaveable potato bakers and hot bowl holders. “You can put the whole dish in the fabric holder before you put it in the microwave. You don’t need trivets or pot holders to handle it—it can go straight from the microwave to the table,” she explains.

The year-round market is open Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through March, and 2 to 6 p.m., April through October, 2020.

Location: 20733 Miflin Rd. (Co. Rd. 20), Foley, AL. For more information, call 251-597-5557 or visit CoastalAlabamaMarket.com.
