Fostering a Better Way of Life

I work my longest hours
of the year during the first
three weeks of January.
Ahead of our annual Healthy
& Green Living Directory
issue, which comes out
every February, I’m often up
late and working through
any free moments I can
find on weekends. This
year was no different as I
worked with more than 60
businesses that wanted to
share their commitment to
wellness with each of you.
When my kids get tired of
seeing me behind my desk,
they like to ask, “If you’re
the boss, then why do you have to work right now?” I explain that I have a deadline with
my printer, which is like an appointment, and if I miss my scheduled time I have to wait a
week until they can fit me in again.
While my print deadline drives my schedule logistically, it’s the steadfast community of
Natural Awakenings supporters that motivates me to work when no one (but my family)
is looking. That includes readers like you.
We strive to compile insightful content that
will inspire the individuals who are picking up the 14,000-plus magazines we distribute
every month—even during a pandemic.
Additionally, my advertisers silently push me to be my best. As sponsors of our free
publication, I feel a deep commitment to the partnerships we form as it becomes my
mission to effectively connect each of them to the readers who will benefit most from
their health-conscious products and services.
As you read this issue, take notice of all the small business owners who are going above
and beyond to fulfill their purpose. They do so not because someone is requiring them
to, but because they are passionate about serving our community.
Get to know a Feng
Shui consultant who takes her clients on an uplifting journey of self discovery as they
learn about balancing their physical space. Learn about the Fairhope juicer who chooses
to bottle in glass instead of affordable single-use plastic because she is investing in
the long-term health of her customers and the planet. Discover a sustainable farming
network that is leading the way toward a more equitable world by committing to
progressive food justice initiatives around the state. These are just a few examples of the
people, organizations and businesses in this month’s issue who cultivate the health and
sustainability of our local community.
When you are your own boss it can be difficult to be at your best every day. On some
afternoons, craft time with your 6-year-old calls more loudly than the overflowing inbox,
or a warm sunny day convinces you that sales calls can wait. And that’s okay. There will
always be temptations veering us off track, but when we are truly passionate about the
work we do, the desire to give it your all will prevail. Thank you for being a part of the
community that inspires my work every day. Together, we are fostering a better way of
life for ourselves and those all around us.
With peace and gratitude,

Meredith Montgomery, Publisher
