Integrative Healthcare Now Offers Comprehensive Weight Loss Programs

Tara McLellan, Functional Medicine Nurse Practitioner
and founder of Integrative Healthcare of
Lower Alabama, remembers that she became a nurse practitioner because she
wanted to help people be healthier and happier. “I quickly realized Western
medicine really pushes medication rather than digging into the root cause of an
issue. I felt there should be a more holistic way to practice medicine” she
says. “So, I started studying functional medicine and became a certified
practitioner through the Institute of Functional Medicine.”
“Integrating traditional and functional medicine allows me
to assess possible root causes of a person’s
symptoms, and not simply prescribe medication to manage the symptom,”
says McLellan. “I evaluate each patient’s lifestyle—nutrition, sleep, exercise,
stress management—along with possible sources
of inflammation or toxicity which may be contributing to symptoms, as well as
possible genetic contributors. This helps people achieve health with a more
natural, comprehensive approach.”
McLellan enjoys spending time with her patients and
listening to their needs in order to co-create their path to healing. “I
believe that the functional medicine model can bring true wellness, which
involves not only the body, but also the mind and soul,” she says.
McLellan has
successfully treated people with autoimmune diseases, hormone imbalances,
cardiovascular diseases, chronic mold
exposures and even mental health disorders. “I am expanding my practice to
focus more on weight loss. I hear all the time that people cannot lose weight
despite their best efforts.
They may be eating too much or too little of
certain foods. They may have hormone imbalances that are hindering their progress,
hormonal changes during peri-menopause or
menopause, thyroid hormone imbalances or blood sugar/insulin dysregulation. And
they may not be properly detoxifying as they lose fat.” She adds that all these
factors make weight loss and sustaining it more difficult. Her program offers a
comprehensive hormone analysis, personalized nutrition plans with real foods,
lifestyle interventions and individual supplement recommendations. There is an
added option to utilize a health coach for accountability and customized weekly
modifications, as needed.
Raised in Mobile, Alabama, McLellan has been a
board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner for over ten years and is also an
instructor for the Masters of Science in
Nursing program at the University of
South Alabama. She practiced in two of the largest community health centers on
the Gulf Coast, prior to starting her own practice.
